NEW DELHI – The latest session of India's often-raucous Parliament has been adjourned after weeks of shouting matches between the country's beleaguered government and the opposition.
The monthlong session ended Friday with only four out of 30 slated bills passed.
Over the last two weeks, both houses of Parliament have done little business as lawmakers of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party stalled proceedings demanding the prime minister's resignation after an audit report said the government lost huge sums of money by selling coal fields without competitive bidding.
The BJP refused the government's pleas to debate the subject. Its spokesman Arun Jaitley said his party wanted to shake the country's conscience.
On Friday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked the opposition to decide whether stalling Parliament was the way to "serve our functioning democracy."
