Police say Indian forces have killed two suspected rebels in a gunbattle and injured seven civilians separately during anti-India protests in southern Kashmir.

A police officer says two army officers and one policeman were injured in Friday's fighting in Chandigam, a village in the Indian portion of Kashmir. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

The civilian casualties occurred as villagers protested forces besieging them, villager Irshad Wani says. The protest spread to neighboring Pulwama.

More than 68,000 people have been killed since 1989 in an armed rebellion against Indian rule and in an ensuing Indian crackdown that has largely crushed the militants. The Kashmir region is divided between India and Pakistan, and both countries claim it in its entirety.
