SRINAGAR, India – Police are investigating a shooting near a military convoy in the main city of India-held Kashmir, amid expectations for upcoming talks between the Indian and Pakistani leaders.
It was not immediately clear whether the shots fired Saturday in Srinagar came from two men riding a motorcycle past the convoy, or from patrolling street soldiers who suspected the men were militants.
No casualties were reported. Police Director General Ashok Prasad said authorities were investigating.
Rebels have been fighting Indian rule in the disputed Himalayan territory since 1989. On Thursday, insurgents stormed a police station and an army camp in Jammu region, sparking a gunbattle that left 13 people dead.
The prime ministers of India and Pakistan, which have fought two wars over Kashmir, are scheduled to meet Sunday in Washington.
