CHISINAU, Moldova – Moldova was expected to get a new prime minister after the constitutional court banned acting Prime Minister Vlad Filat from standing again, a ruling many see as political.
The court ruled late Monday that Filat, whose pro-European government was ousted in a March 5th confidence motion in Parliament, cannot stand again as prime minister because he is suspected of corruption.
Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca will be named as prime minister later Tuesday. Parliament is due to vote on a new government this week.
Filat on Tuesday called the ruling "a political decision ...which could have a negative effect on Moldova." He is opposed by parties who seek closer relations to Moscow.
Unspecified allegations of corruption were made against Filat during debate.
The European Union has previously told Moldova to reform its justice system.
