One month after the death of Jacqueline Gomez, Houston officials still aren’t sure what caused the teenager’s prom night to turn tragic.

The medical examiner said this week that he couldn’t determine what exactly killed Gomez, a senior from MacArthur High School, whose boyfriend woke up the day after prom, May 17, to find her dead.

According to media reports, Gomez partied after the dance at the Hyatt North Houston with her boyfriend, who called police in a panic upon discovering she wasn’t breathing.

Local television station KHOU reported that no charges have been filed in the case. The boyfriend, whose name hasn’t been released, was brought in for questioning but investigators don’t think he was involved in the girl’s death.

“I woke up. I tried waking her but she wouldn’t,” the boyfriend said in a text to a friend. "I was screaming and crying telling her to wake up. But she didn't. She didn't."

According to text messages obtained by the Houston Chronicle, 17-year-old Gomez had alcohol and hydrocodone in her system. Investigators say the girl’s mother asked her to come home after the dance. Instead, the boyfriend’s mother booked a room for the two of them at the Hyatt North Houston.

“You can imagine if you have ever attended a high school prom what goes on there,” Houston homicide Det. Mike Miller told KTRK. “This is no exception.”
