TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – The Honduran Attorney General's Office says a court has issued arrest warrants for five police officers accused of killing seven gang members.
Spokesman Elvis Guzman says the officers are accused of murder, illegal breaking and entering and abuse of authority, among other charges.
Guzman said Tuesday that the warrants come after a year-long investigation into a 2011 police operation in San Pedro Sula. The city in northern Honduras is one of the most violent places in the world.
The victims were members of the 18th Street gang, one of Honduras' two most powerful and violent. It has accused Honduran police of running death squads.
The warrants were turned over to Honduran police to arrest their own members. Police officials could not be reached for comment.
