Officials say Jordanian security forces have exchanged fire with armed men during arrest raids in the northern city of Irbid, killing several gunmen.

Jordan's Public Security Directorate referred to those being targeted as "outlaws" but did not elaborate. Local media said more than 20 suspected militants were arrested in the raids.

The Public Security Directorate said confrontations began earlier Tuesday and were continuing in the evening. It says troops surrounded a building where gunmen were holed up.

The statement reported several deaths and injuries among those targeted in the raids. It says three members of the security forces were injured.
