BENGHAZI, Libya -- Hundreds of mourners are carrying the coffin of the rebels' slain military chief to a cemetery a day after he was gunned down under still mysterious circumstances.

Abdel-Fattah Younis' coffin was covered with the rebel tricolor flag as it was carried over the crowd on Friday.

Benghazi residents are worried that Younis' death could shatter their military, leaving the rebel-held east vulnerable to attack by Muammar Qaddafi's forces.

A rebel leader said Younis was summoned on Thursday for questioning but was shot dead with two aides before he arrived. Rebel security officers said earlier that they had arrested Younis for questioning about alleged ties to Qaddafi's regime, raising the possibility he died in their custody.
