BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – French President Francois Hollande is suggesting Argentina could help with the humanitarian crisis of Syrians fleeing civil war and risking their lives to migrate to Europe.
Hollande made the statements Wednesday while standing next to Argentine President Mauricio Macri.
The two leaders met privately and signed agreements to cooperate on a range of issues, from anti-terrorism to cultural exchanges. Then they spoke to reporters.
Hollande lauded Argentina's history of receiving immigrants, mentioning Syrians and Lebanese who arrived in Argentina decades ago. Without referring to the South American nation by name, he then said that "we must make an effort wherever we are" to receive people in refugee camps in Jordan and Syria.
In his words, refugees could be received in places with "existing communities from those countries that can help."
