PARIS – Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is finding out how little is really private these days.
His lawyer on Friday condemned new reports of secret recordings of his phone calls, less than 24 hours after filing a complaint over the release of an aide's audio files of private conversations.
The newspaper Le Monde reported the latest recordings came in a corruption investigation that initially targeted Sarkozy's 2007 presidential campaign. Le Monde said transcriptions of the calls showed Sarkozy and his lawyer, Thierry Herzog, were aware of internal judicial deliberations and were close to a lawyer within the court.
Herzog told Le Monde there was no question of influence peddling.
"Conversations between a lawyer and his client can't be listened to, much less recorded and transcribed," Herzog said, calling it "monstrous."
