HAVANA – Colombia's largest rebel group is defending the peace process suspended by its capture of an army general, saying it should not derail progress toward a deal.
President Juan Manuel Santos suspended the talks after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia captured Gen. Ruben Dario Alzate and two others as they traveled on a remote river in western Colombia over the weekend.
On the second anniversary of the talks, FARC negotiator Luciano Marin Arango, known as Ivan Marquez, told reporters in Havana Wednesday that the results of the discussion "highly favor a political exit from the conflict."
He says "it makes no sense to keep killing each other in confrontations." He adds that he has no direct knowledge of negotiations to free Alzate but acknowledged talks were "possibly taking place elsewhere."
