The concrete cover of a sewage tank collapsed during a funeral Tuesday in northwestern Pakistan, causing 14 people to plunge to their death, police said.

The dead included a mix of women and children who were among dozens of people packed into the courtyard of the house in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province's Buner district, local police investigator Israr Khan said Wednesday.

At least two dozen other people were injured in the accident, which occurred in Jhor village, he said.

Many people in northwestern Pakistan lack proper plumbing and often divert human waste from their home into a large hole covered with concrete.
