CAIRO – Egypt's main opposition group is calling for demonstrations against what it charges is an attempt by the Muslim Brotherhood to take control of the judiciary.
On Monday the National Salvation Front called for rallies to start when a bill expected to reduce the retirement age for judges is discussed in the Islamist-dominated legislature. Last week the head of the legislature asked a committee to review the bill, but no date for a debate was set.
The judiciary is the latest battleground between supporters and opponents of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. His supporters say the courts are filled with loyalists of the deposed regime of Hosni Mubarak.
The NSF said it will defend people's right "to an independent judiciary that is not dominated by a tyrannical executive."
