CAIRO – A criminal court has convicted a policeman on charges of killing protesters during last year's uprising and sentenced him to five years in prison.
Mohammed el-Sunni was previously sentenced to death in absentia while he was on the run. He was retried after he surrendered. He was charged with taking part in the killing of 18 protesters outside a police station in the Cairo Zawya el-Hamrah district on Jan. 28, last year, the bloodiest day of the uprising that toppled longtime authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak.
El-Sunni was convicted and sentenced on Wednesday.
