CAIRO – Egyptian officials say a military tribunal has sentenced a supporter of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi to life in prison and handed 51 others prison terms of five to 15 years for assaulting army troops during riots last month in a Suez Canal city.
The officials said 12 others were acquitted in trial Tuesday.
One military official originally said 11 were sentenced to life. He later corrected the verdict, without elaborating.
The defendants were accused of attacking troops, sabotaging armored vehicles and torching churches in Suez during nationwide violence sparked by a bloody crackdown on pro-Morsi encampments in Cairo that left hundreds dead.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.
