CAIRO – An Egyptian court has convicted four policemen for the killings of 37 Islamist detainees last summer and sentenced one of the officers to 10 years in prison.
Tuesday's verdicts were the first in the only trial against officials accused in killing of supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
The 37 detainees died while being transported in a prison truck in August, reportedly suffocating to death after tear gas was fired into the truck to subdue an alleged attack by the detainees.
A court official says three other officers received one-year suspended sentences. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to talk to media.
Hundreds of Morsi's supporters have been killed in a crackdown on his Muslim Brotherhood group following his ouster by the military last July.
