Denver Faithful Want to See the Virgin of Guadalupe

LOS ANGELES - APRIL 6: Candles burn nightly at the foot of a mural of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the national and religious symbol of Mexico, in the 1990's, where a leader of the Tiny Boys gang was shot to death by members of the State gang April 6, 2007 in Los Angeles, California. Boyle Heights was the upscale Jewish section of Los Angeles until its residents began moving away, many to West LA and Beverly Hills, while low-paid; predominantly Catholic Latino immigrants replaced their occupancy. Boyle Heights struggles to free itself from the gangs terrorizing residents as the synagogue continues to fall into disrepair. As the demographics of large cities in the U.S. continue to shift, populations of large U.S. cities would shrink without immigrants who provide the only source of growth as native-born Americans move to other regions, according to Census Bureau estimates released this week. Without the influx of immigrants from 2000 to 2006, the New York metro region would have lost an estimated nearly 600,000 people while the Los Angeles area would have lost more than 200,000, San Francisco down by 188,000 and Boston 101,000 people. The U.S. has about 36 million immigrants, a third of whom are in the country illegally. Many people believe that a shrinking population would hurt the U.S. economy. Some Denver residents are urging Catholic leaders to make a mural of the Virgin of Guadalupe visible again behind the altar of a church heavily attended by Hispanics.

The group called Faithful United is upset that local church leaders built a white wall blocking the mural about a year ago at the church in north Denver.

The church's pastor says he decided to block the mural because it "detracted from the central focus of the Holy Presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the altar."

Faithful United plans to deliver a letter Tuesday to Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput (SHAP'-yoo) to ask for the wall to be removed.

The Virgin is Mexico's patron saint and is known as the dark-skinned Virgin of Guadalupe.
