YEREVAN, Armenia – Demonstrators and police have clashed outside a police station in the Armenian capital where armed supporters of a jailed opposition leader have held hostages for four days.
It wasn't immediately clear if there were any serious injuries Wednesday evening in which demonstrators supporting the gunmen threw stones and other objects at police surrounding the station. Police responded with tear gas and sonic grenades.
More than 20 armed men took over the police station in Yerevan on Sunday to demand the release of Jirair Sefilian, who was arrested last month. One police officer was killed in the seizure and four others wounded. Five officers continue to be held as hostages.
Sefilian was charged with illegal possession of weapons. Investigators claimed he and his supporters were planning to seize government buildings.
