A Danish man appeared in a South African court after he was found storing 21 pieces of female genitalia in plastic bags in his freezer.

Crowds jeered the man on Monday as police escorted him from the courtroom. Police said the man will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Sept. 28.

The investigating officer said it appears the Danish man collected genitalia as trophies. Warrant Officer Lynda Steyn said one of the specimens found was labelled with a woman's name, the country Lesotho, and the year 2010.

The man was arrested on Thursday in the city of Bloemfontein. Police also discovered anesthetic and surgical implements, among them a pair of pliers.

The Associated Press has not named the man because he has not yet entered a plea.
