Chinese authorities say eight people have died in a clash between construction workers and villagers in a southwestern region.

The local government of Jinning county in Yunnan province said Wednesday that the clash on the construction site for a warehouse and logistics center also left 18 people injured.

The government says six construction workers and two villagers have been killed.

It is not immediately clear what caused the conflict, but land disputes are common in China where villagers often believe their lands have been unfairly seized for the benefit of developers.
