Chilean truckers are blocking one of the country's main roads to protest arson attacks, one of which killed an elderly couple in the southern region of Araucania.

State TV showed images of a long line of trucks clogging the Route 5, the north-south highway running for more than 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometers).

Truckers are protesting the killing of Werner Luchsinger and his wife Vivian McKay. The couple family's vast landholdings had been long-targeted by Mapuche Indians. They were burned alive on Friday while trying to defend their home.

The couple's death has triggered a national debate on the conflict in the Araucania region.

Groups of the Mapuche have occupied and burned forestry and often torch lumber trucks to demand the return of their ancestral territories.
