Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s wife said she fears for the drug lord’s health and just wants authorities to let him sleep.

Emma Coronel, 26, told a Mexican radio station that his health is deteriorating rapidly in jail. She accuses authorities at the Altiplano maximum-security prison in Mexico of trying to kill Guzmán by not letting the drug lord sleep more than a few hours at a time.

Granted a 20-minute visit with Guzmán – her second since his recapture in January – Coronel told the reporter Ciro Gómez Leyva, “I thought he would be better, but he looked much worse. As soon as I walked in, he told me he felt really bad.”

She told the Radio Formula interviewer that Guzmán is having problems with nervousness and anxiety, and his blood pressure is high, an allegation both she and Guzmán’s lawyers made in a Telemundo report last week.

“We are very worried that his life is in danger,” she told Gómez Leyva. “They aren’t doing anything to help him get better.”

She said that she fears the lack of sleep and nervousness will lead to a heart attack or a stroke.

Coronel added that the only medication he’s received is sleeping pills, which she says he doesn’t need. If it isn’t an attempt on his life, she said, “They should explain why they’re playing around with his health.”

Authorities have been waking Guzmán every few hours for head counts and moving him from cell to cell. He embarrassed authorities by escaping from Altiplano prison in July 2015 through a mile-long tunnel that opened into the shower area of his cell.

Coronel quoted the drug lord as saying he wasn't allowed to exercise in open air but doesn't care and only wants to be allowed to sleep.
