Mexico World Cup win celebration grew rowdy in California
A celebration by fans of Mexico’s World Cup soccer team spilled onto the streets in California, where they clashed with police officers.
A celebration by fans of Mexico’s World Cup soccer team spilled onto the streets of Huntington Beach, Calif., where they clashed first with motorists and then with police officers.
Four people were arrested, according to Huntington Park police. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that one woman was arrested on suspicion of throwing a bottle at an officer on horseback, two people on suspicion of public intoxication and a fourth for failing to disperse.
Television footage, mostly taken from helicopters overhead, showed a man being wrestled to the ground and cuffed by deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Huntington Park police detective Elsa Cobain told the City News Service (CNS) that the incident began at about 3:30 p.m., a half hour after the Mexican national team defeated Croatia at the World Cup in Brazil, advancing to the next round of the tournament.
Hundreds of fans took the party to the streets, where news cameras caught them being unruly, blocking traffic and rocking vehicles.
“I heard that some of the people came from a viewing party at El Club on Pacific Boulevard and some from the plaza over by Florence Avenue,” Cobain said. They weren’t “complying with orders to disperse from the scene,” she added.
According to Fox affiliate KTTV, Huntington Park police invoked a mutual aid agreement with the surrounding municipalities, and officers from the town were reinforced by police from Santa Monica and other towns, California Highway Patrol officers and mounted units from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
