Police say a bus has rolled nearly 120 meters (400 feet) down a gorge in a hilly area in western India and killed at least 11 people.

Police officer Raghunath Yadav says the driver lost control of the bus after it collided with a truck on Thursday near Malshej Ghat, a tourist spot about 160 kilometers (100 miles) northeast of Mumbai.

Yadav says the rescue work is underway as 40 people were reported to be traveling on the bus.

India has the world's deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
