Bulgaria's prime minister say that last week's appointment of the nation's security chief was a mistake, but that his government will not resign over it.

Thousands took to the streets of the capital, Sofia, and other cities demanding the government resigns over the appointment of Delyan Peevski, a media mogul, as the head of the national security agency.

Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski said the Parliament's decision on Friday to appoint Peevski was a mistake, and he will consult the public before the new chief is put in place.

Oresharski said Monday that he has accepted Peevski's resignation. Parliament now needs to hold a vote to formalize that decision.
