A building under construction has collapsed in the southern Indian state of Goa, killing at least seven people and leaving about 40 others trapped in the rubble.

Police Superintendent Shekhar Prabhudesai says authorities are still trying to determine how many people were on site when the five-story structure crumpled on Saturday afternoon in Canacona, about 70 kilometers (44 miles) from the state capital of Panaji.

Rescuers are digging through the debris in search of survivors.
