The brother of Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has been convicted of raping his daughter in a case that embarrassed the Irish nationalist political party.

A Belfast jury found Liam Adams guilty Tuesday on 10 counts of raping and sexually assaulting his daughter Aine from 1977 to 1983, when she was 4 to 9 years old.

The 58-year-old Adams faces sentencing later this month.

Aine Adams testified that Sinn Fein long discouraged her from reporting the crimes because the party, led since 1983 by Gerry Adams, rejected police authority.

Gerry Adams testified he had known about the allegations since 1987 and confronted his brother privately about them.

Liam Adams fled Belfast in 2009 before his original trial. He was extradited from the Republic of Ireland in 2011.
