British man dies after fall from Romanian hotel window; media reports man is British diplomat

BUCHAREST, Romania – Romanian police say a 47-year-old British man has died after falling from a hotel window in the northwest of the country. Media reported that he was a diplomat and that the death was a suicide.

Police spokeswoman for the region Dumitrita Rus said the man died at about noon Thursday after falling from the top floor of the hotel in the city of Baia Mare. She said an investigation is underway and declined to provide further information.

Realitatea TV reported the man was a diplomat at the British embassy and that he jumped from the seventh floor of the Mara Hotel. It broadcast images of a body in a white sheet being put into a vehicle.

British Embassy spokeswoman Raluca Bragarea declined to comment on the media reports.
