A British police force has become the first in the country to categorize the sexual and verbal harassment of women as a hate crime, in a bid to tackle misogynistic acts.
Police in Nottinghamshire said Wednesday that abuse toward women -- including cat-calling -- can be reported to and investigated by authorities, the BBC reports.
"What women face, often on a daily basis, is absolutely unacceptable and can be extremely distressing," Chief Constable Sue Fish said.
Officers will also examine how a victim can be supported and if anything can be done to prevent them from being targeted again, according to the BBC.
Nottinghamshire police are the first in Britain to adopt a separate misogyny hate-crime category, The Guardian reported.
The police force defines misogynistic acts as "Incidents against women that are motivated by an attitude of a man toward a woman and includes behavior targeted toward a woman by men simply because they are a woman."
Domestic abuse cases will not be treated as hate crimes since they have their own procedure, police said.
