Brazilian police have determined that a body that washed up on a beach three days ago is that of missing Australian Rye Hunt.

Police inspector Elen Souto says forensic tests confirmed the identity.

She said in a statement Saturday that the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition and investigators have not been able to establish the cause of death.

The 25-year-old Hunt went missing in Rio de Janeiro in mid-May.

Hunt's family confirmed the identification on a Facebook page dedicated to finding him. It asked for the family's privacy to be respected and said relatives would not be available for comment.
