A high-ranking Kenyan security official tells The Associated Press that an improvised explosive device exploded at a popular restaurant outside Nairobi's airport, damaging a metal trash can and the ceiling.

The official insisted on anonymity to talk about an investigation still under way into the Thursday night incident.

Meanwhile, a police official who also insisted on anonymity on Friday said authorities recovered from a city slum a bullet-riddled car with a dead body and an improvised explosive device inside.

The investigator said police believe the car was involved in a shooting incident at the airport gate late Thursday.

Shortly after the blast late Thursday, Kenyan police chief David Kimaiyo said the explosion was caused by a light bulb falling into a trash can.
