An investigation commissioned by Austria's defense minister has concluded there was no wrongdoing by Austrian peacekeepers in a 2012 incident in which smugglers ambushed Syrian secret police in the Golan Heights.

The probe followed the leaking of a video apparently filmed by Austrian U.N. peacekeepers, who were in the area on a United Nations mandate and were overheard discussing whether to warn the officers that they suspected an ambush. Nine Syrian secret police officers were later killed.

The Austrian commission found the soldiers had strict instructions not to behave in any way that could be interpreted as an intervention.

The Austria Press Agency reported that defense ministry general secretary Wolfgang Baumann said "the firefight could not be prevented by the soldiers on the ground, however they had behaved."
