Australia eases sanctions against Myanmar

SYDNEY – Australia is easing some sanctions against Myanmar following the formerly military-run Southeast Asian nation's pledge to move toward democracy.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr said Monday that Australia will lift financial and travel restrictions for more than 260 people in Myanmar, including President Thein Sein. Carr said the move was in response to Myanmar's recent political reforms.

Australia will keep its arms embargo and sanctions will remain against around 130 people in Myanmar, including military officials.

Last year, Myanmar's military ceded power to a civilian government it backed and promised to move toward democracy. Pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi recently won a seat in parliament in historic by-elections.
