Officials and witnesses say a riot broke out in a western Kenya town after a man running for parliament was shot and killed. At least one other person died in ensuing violence.

Witnesses said the man running for office, Shem Onyango, was shot and killed while driving with his wife. A member of parliament, Ayiecho Olweny, led protests over the shooting. Gunshots could be heard during the protests and at least one person was killed.

Kenya holds national elections in March, and fears are rising that the violence seen during the country's 2007-08 presidential election could return.
