Syria's deputy foreign minister says he has "every confidence" that the Syrian military can recover all of the country's territory now in rebel hands.

Faisal Mekdad tells The Associated Press in Damascus that he believes victory is within reach, despite "huge quantities of weapons and armed groups pouring into Syria" to fight against the government.

Mekdad's comments on Thursday came amid a government offensive to recapture areas in the country's central and northern provinces and around the capital, Damascus.

Mekdad says that as for President Barack Obama's decision to arm Syrian rebel groups, "the credibility of the U.S. has been broken as a result of such intentions."

He called on Washington to stop supporting the rebels, although he stressed that Syria can and will defend itself.
