Anti-gov't protests in Maldives ahead of report

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Maldives' ousted president is leading street protests again calling on the new government to resign after his representative pulled out of an inquiry commission that probes whether a change of government earlier this year amounted to a coup.

The resignation of Ahmed Saeed, representative of former President Mohamed Nasheed, a day before Thursday's final report of a Commonwealth-sponsored inquiry commission threatens to exacerbate the country's political tensions.

Speaking to reporters Saeed said the report was being prepared without statements from key witnesses, photo and video evidence.

Soon after Nasheed asked his supporters to protest saying he is "ready to change the government from the streets."

Nasheed resigned in February after weeks of protests and losing support from the military and police. He later claimed he was ousted at gunpoint.
