LUANDA, Angola – Preliminary results show that Angola's ruling party has won 75 percent of the national vote, assuring President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, in power for 33 years, another five years in office.
With 60 percent of the vote counted, the state election commission said the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola , or MPLA, has gained a large majority, but it is a reduced margin from previous elections in 2008.
The largest opposition party, UNITA, won 18 percent of the vote and a newcomer party, CASA-CE, gained four percent. The opposition parties criticized the elections for not being free and fair.
Elias Isaac, an observer for the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa, criticized the process, saying he was surprised the MPLA did not get 90 percent of the vote.
