Amid tensions, South Korea test-fires ballistic missiles that can strike all of North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea says it has successfully test-fired two domestically built ballistic missiles that can hit all of North Korea.

The test comes amid continuing animosity between the rival Koreas over Pyongyang's push to bolster its nuclear and missile capabilities.

Seoul's Defense Ministry says the missiles, which had a reported range of more than 500 kilometers (300 miles), were fired from a southern launch pad Wednesday.

A 2012 deal with the United States allows Seoul to possess longer-range missiles to better cope with North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. Pyongyang has called that deal a plot to ignite a war. The North is heavily sanctioned for its past long-range rocket and nuclear tests.

The North's recent claim to have test-fired a missile from a submarine caused security worries in the South.
