Ten Albanians have begun a hunger strike to protest what they say is the government firing them from civil service jobs due to their political affiliation.

The opposition center-right Democratic Party says the Socialist-led government has fired thousands of people from public-sector posts since coming to power eight months ago. The government counters that only 400 have filed official complaints for unfair dismissal.

The six men and four women said Thursday they will continue their hunger strike indefinitely. They set up a tent near the main government building in the capital Tirana, late Wednesday night, where they have vowed to remain.

Democratic leader Lulzim Basha and lawmakers are supporting the strike, saying they are also planning an anti-government rally later this week.
