After Breivik, Norway pushes to extend prison sentence for terrorism to 30 years

OSLO, Norway – The Norwegian government has proposed extending the maximum prison sentence for terrorism to 30 years, in the wake of Anders Behring Breivik's attacks last year that killed 77 people.

In its proposals to Parliament on Tuesday, the government also put forward a motion to criminalize participation in terrorist organizations, but said courts should define such groups.

Norway's Labor Party-led coalition is also calling for stricter immigration laws to facilitate expelling anyone deemed to pose a threat to national security.

Justice Minster Grete Faremo said the government wants to sharpen legislation to help police to prevent and combat terrorism.

Breivik, an anti-Muslim fanatic, is serving the current 21-year maximum sentence for terrorism. However, it can be extended for as long as he's considered dangerous.
