Afghanistan's president is on a visit to Pakistan to discuss peace talks with the Afghan Taliban.

Pakistan is seen as key to the process because of its strong historical ties with the insurgent group.

Pakistan state TV said Monday that Afghan President Hamid Karzai had arrived in Islamabad. Karzai said before departing that he was hopeful the trip would be productive, but that he was not confident.

Neighbors Pakistan and Afghanistan have long had troubled relations, and view each other with suspicion.

Karzai's visit comes after an attempt to jumpstart peace talks in the Qatari capital of Doha foundered in June.
