ISLAMABAD – A Pakistani and an Afghan official say the Afghan High Peace Council is in Pakistan to meet with the Afghan Taliban's former deputy leader.
The government officials said Wednesday that the council members will meet the former Taliban No. 2, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, in an attempt to push the peace process forward. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists.
Baradar was arrested in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi in 2010 in a joint operation with the CIA. Pakistan released Baradar in September in an attempt to breathe life into the stuttering peace process.
But some observers doubt he will do much good because he was in captivity for so long.
