Rescuers and fishermen have found eight survivors and 17 bodies after searching two days for a motorboat lost since its captain reported an engine failure off Indonesia's main island of Java.

Local Search and Rescue Agency head Muhamad Hernanto said the boat left Monday from Raas island in East Java province heading to the neighboring resort island of Bali.

He said the captain reported an engine failure due to broken propeller Monday evening before authorities lost contact. Until it was determined Wednesday that the boat capsized, authorities didn't know if it sank or if it was stranded on another island in the archipelago.

Local reports said the 18-meter-long boat was carrying people to a wedding ceremony in Bali.
