A Chinese court says five people have gone on trial for allegedly beating a woman to death in a McDonald's outlet after they unsuccessfully tried to recruit her into their cult.

The trial opened Thursday in east China's Shandong province.

The court's microblog says the five are accused of murder, and that three of them also face cult-related charges. It posted photos of the proceedings.

The accused allegedly killed the woman one evening in May after she refused to give her number to the suspects, who were trying to recruit new members for their "all-powerful spirit" cult.

The cult claims Jesus has been resurrected as a Chinese woman.

State media say it is one of 14 cults that China has listed as illegal.
