Chad's state prosecutor says four officials, including two generals and two lawmakers, have been arrested after attempting to overthrow the government of the Central African nation in a coup d'etat.

Mahamat Saleh Younous told reporters during a news conference Thursday that Gen. Weiding Assi Assoue, who was a provincial governor for several terms, Gen. David Gomine, the head of the military tribunal, and two lawmakers, Mahamat Kadre and former health minister Saleh Makki, have been in custody since Wednesday.

Younous said the documents they had in their possession, which outlined their plans, have been recuperated.

He said: "Because they were trying to destabilize the constitutional order and the security of the state, they were immediately handed over to us."
