Greater Manchester Police in England say two unarmed female officers have died after they attempted to deal with a routine incident.

Police said the officers, whose names were not immediately released, died within hours of the incident late Tuesday morning.

The police did not explain what the officers were doing at the time but said there were reports of shots being fired.

A 29-year-old man later surrendered at a police station. He was arrested on suspicion of killing the first officer and on suspicion of killing a father and son in a gun-and-grenade attack last month.

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan says police are "piecing together exactly what happened this morning."
