CONAKRY, Guinea – Angry residents of Guinea's capital who have been without electricity for a week took to the streets to demand an end to the power cuts. At least two people were killed in the clashes, when security forces intervened to break up the demonstration.
Police spokesman Boubacar Kasse said protesters had tried to block the main highway connecting the city's outlying suburbs with the town center. Kasse said one protester died after being crushed by a police vehicle. A policeman was also killed after being hit in the head by a rock.
Despite its vast mineral resources, Guinea remains one of the world's poorest countries. Power cuts in the capital are so bad that schoolchildren hike to the international airport to study for their exams under the runway's floodlights.
