Oregon man admitted to burning mom's body in fire pit, police say

Police in Oregon found bones believed to be a local woman’s a day after her son was arrested for abuse of a corpse.
Officers responded to a welfare check request of 57-year-old Katherine McDowell at her Beaverton home Monday, Fox 12 Oregon reported.
Beaverton Police Department officers spoke with McDowell’s daughter, who requested the welfare check, and McDowell’s son, Matthew Gutierrez.

Gutierrez, 24, was arrested during the investigation on the charge of abuse of a corpse. Gutierrez reportedly told police that he burned his mother’s body in a fire pit in their backyard.
Authorities searched the property Tuesday and found confirmed human remains. Police believe the remains are McDowell’s.

Police told Fox 12 that Gutierrez, who is currently being held in a county jail, has been arrested twice since January 2016 “on allegations of domestic harassment involving his family, including an arrest in March involving his mother.
