Illinois Man Killed in Lawn Mower Accident

A veteran groundskeeper at an Illinois golf course died in a freak lawn mower accident Tuesday morning, Fox 2 St. Louis reports.

It is still undetermined what caused Willie Werling to take a wrong turn while mowing the grass at the Waterloo-based Annbriar Golf Course, where he worked for more than 20 years. Werling, while moving from one hole to the next, veered off the cart path down a hill.

The mower then rolled on top of Werling, killing him. The coroner says he died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Werling is well known in the community due to his involvement in local sports. He was known by many for umpiring school baseball games and refereeing at basketball games for more than four decades. Some people called him "Low Ball Willie" because of his low and wide strike zone, Fox 2 St. Louis reports.

The coroner says the victim had no pre-existing medical problems.
