Funeral held for New Jersey woman whose disappearance led to Long Island serial killer probe
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}More than three years after her remains were found, a graveside funeral service has been held for a New Jersey woman who disappeared near where 10 victims of a suspected Long Island serial killer were discovered.
Shannan Gilbert was a 24-year-old escort from Jersey City who disappeared on May 1, 2010. Her remains were found near a beach highway in December 2011.
She was last seen in Oak Beach, a community several miles from where the 10 others were located during the search for Gilbert.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Gilbert's mother, Mari, and her attorney dispute police assertions that Gilbert's death was not connected to that of the other 10. Police theorized she may have drowned in a marsh.
Local funeral directors donated their services for the funeral.
